New York City Alley at Night
By Vivienne Gucwa
At night
the city stars
shine like supernovas
in a vast
urban universe.
And in the hours
just before midnight
during muffled increments
of time
when the city's heart
palpitates in time
to the distant lullaby
of the day's remains
dreams sleepwalk
their way
through the
alleys and streets.
---
New York City doesn't have many alleys. This is an alley in lower Manhattan. This was taken on a quiet night with my Sony A99.
I love the moments that occur when night falls and dreams roam the streets.

Winter Garden Theatre and Times Square - Night - New York City
- By Vivienne Gucwa
This is an 8 second long exposure of the Winter Garden Theatre located on Broadway looking towards the lights of Times Square. The Winter Garden Theatre's building was built in the late 1800s but it came to life as a theatre in 1911.
I have always wanted to capture this view in a photo. My earliest memories of it are from when I was 8 or 9 years old. My father worked nights as a pressman for the Daily News which was located in this general area. I accompanied him a few times to the Daily News and he would take me for a walk along Broadway where my eyes lit up wide wth wonder at the sight of each and every theatre's lights and marquees.
The Winter Garden Theatre at the time was home to the musical Cats and I would secretly hope that I could go see Cats one day every time we passed this theatre. I had the musical soundtrack at home and I played it repeatedly and even taught myself several of the songs on piano. I never made it to Cats since Broadway theatre outings were out of the reach of my parent's humble budget.
My first Broadway show was Starlight Express which I attended on a public school trip (there were some perks to going to public school in NYC). My 10 year old self was totally enthralled with Starlight Express (all of the performers were on rollerskates and the story revolved around a child's train set that came to life). But I still remember unfairly comparing Starlight Express to Cats in my mind telling myself that somehow Cats would have been even more enthralling given my level of obsession with it at the time.
My eyes still lit up wide with wonder while I waited for my long exposure to finish processing. Some things never change.nycnew yorknew york citycitycity lightscity nightcity photographycityscapelong exposuremanhattanmanhattan nightmidtown manhattannew york city streetnew york nightnew york photonew york photographynew york streetnightnight photographynyc lightsnyc nightnyc photonyc streetsony a99times squaretimes square lightsurbanurban landscapeurban photographyvivienne gucwa

Empire State Building and the Manhattan Bridge on a Summer Night
- By Vivienne Gucwa
And the lights were shining like stars:
rays poking themselves
out from the edge
of dreams
dancing with the
shadows below.
In the distance
a distant star shined
brighter and brighter
as the night sky
whispered bedtime stories
in purple, hushed tones.
And the lights were shining
like stars.

New York City Skyline - City Lights at Night
- By Vivienne Gucwa There is nothing like summer nights in the city when the heavy haze, thick with the day’s dreams, nestles itself into the cradle of lights below. --- This is a view of the New York City skyline looking south facing the Empire State Building, 1 WTC (also known as the Freedom Tower) and the Statue of Liberty. It is a 25 second long exposure. While this view is probably one of the most popular views in Manhattan, it still never fails to impress. ---NYCNew YorkNew York Cityabove new yorkarchitectureCitycity lightscity nightcity photographycityscapecityscape nightempire state buildingempire state building viewlong exposuremanhattanmanhattan nightmanhattan skylinemidtown manhattanmidtown skyscrapersnew york city nightnew york city photographynew york city skylinenew york nightnew york photonew york photographynight photographynyc lightsnyc nightnyc photonyc skylinenyc skyscrapersSkylineskyscrapersurbanurban photographyvivienne gucwavivienne gucwa photographyNewYorkLightsNight

New York City Skyline - Skyscrapers at Night
- By Vivienne Gucwa
In the blink of an eye the city's lights twinkle like stars in a universe that rises up from the ground to the surface of a darkening sky.
And all at once, everything else seems to fade away.
---
This was taken on a frigid evening at Gantry Plaza State Park in Queens with wind gusts that roared across the river to the rocks I was teetering on with nothing more than my tripod and utterances of hope that the wind would let up for just a few seconds.
It didn't.
But as I stood there frozen in place for what seemed like the longest 30 seconds of the night, the city’s glow rivaled that of a roaring fire and everything else seemed to pale in comparison.

Manhattan Bridge - Night - New York City
- By Vivienne Gucwa
The world stops spinning on its axis
as the city's lights search through the night
for hearts that flutter to the
syncopation of its pulsating lights.
----
This was taken on a stormy night in Brooklyn as the waves in the East River pounded the piers and the wind whipped against the faces of the few brave souls who were still standing at the edge of Brooklyn Bridge Park hoping to catch a first glimpse of the city's lights as they flickered into view.

New York City - Night
- By Vivienne Gucwa
I have been traipsing all over the city for the last few months trying to capture a large majority of New York City’s skyline views. I think everyone has a particular skyline view they immediately think of when they think of the city. And yet, it’s still incredible to me after all this time that I come across different skyline angles that I hadn’t previously come across or had the time to explore before from certain vantage points.
New York City has several prominent skyline views that are popular. One is in lower Manhattan and usually includes the skyscrapers of the Financial District along with the one or more of the bridges that serve the lower part of Manhattan. The other series of skyline views can be found from the top of a few popular skyscrapers in midtown Manhattan. Another series of skyline views involves the midtown Manhattan skyline as seen from different vantage points across (or in some cases directly from) the East River. This particular view is taken from one of the latter vantage points. It’s a 30 second long exposure taken on a gorgeously clear and cold night in the beginning of March from Roosevelt Island.
Prominent skyscrapers in this view are the Chrysler Building and the United Nations building (all the way to the left). The lights of other famous midtown skyscrapers can also be seen even if those skyscrapers (looking at you Empire State Building) are hidden in this view. The lights directly in front of the skyscrapers that line the East River belong to the FDR Drive, a major traffic route that lines New York City’s east side.

New York Night - Queensboro Bridge and the New York City Skyline
- By Vivienne Gucwa When the night falls hard onto the city's shoulders and the sky drapes a dark blanket over the skyscrapers and buildings, it's hard to contain the effervescent charm that bursts forth after the sun has retreated.
---
This is the Queensboro Bridge which is known by a few other names depending on where you are from and how long you have lived in New York City. Despite growing up in Queens, I will always think of this bridge as the 59th Street Bridge because I think I belonged to one of the few families in Queens that for whatever reason associated the bridge more with 59th Street in Manhattan. It's also known as Queens Bridge which is a shortened form of Queensboro Bridge. Its current official name is the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, named after the now deceased former mayor of New York City who held office from the late 70s to the early 80s. He was many things least of all a "character" (as we say).
The vantage point is from Roosevelt Island and this is the result of a 30 second exposure taken with the Sony A99. It was taken on a bitterly cold night in the beginning of March while I was having a spirited conversation with one of the Roosevelt Island security guards regarding the abandoned smallpox hospital further down the island. I tend to love to shoot long exposures alone but it was great to have the company (and quirky conversation) that night. It's those type of moments that make me love the city: little bursts of spontaneity and brevity while watching the lights sparkle in the city's eyes.

New York Winter - Snow on 42nd Street
- By Vivienne Gucwa
New York City resembles a snow-globe when snow first falls. As the snow swirls, the trees reach over the city streets as if they are trying to catch snowflakes with their bare, graceful branches.
---
This was taken at night during a winter storm in New York City that dropped enough snow to turn the city into a winter wonderland momentarily. This is the area on 42nd Street next to Bryant Park across from the Grace Building which can be seen partially on the left-hand side of the image. It's one of my favorite spots to snow-gaze at night.

that stretches across
the urban universe:
a patchwork of dreams

glistening dust
down from night skies

dreamers who
venture
into the city streets
in search of the glittery manifestations
of inspired utterances
that once escaped on the ends
of impassioned utterances
into the night air.

New York City Snow on a Winter Night
By Vivienne Gucwa
On winter nights
we walk through streets
muffled into silence
by freshly fallen snow
that yields to our
footsteps
eager to record
our passing
if only for a brief moment.
And as the buildings
rise up like mountains
it's the in-between moments
that stir the hearts
of fellow urban somnambulists.
Held close
under an umbrella
as the city embraces us,
time pauses
and we huddle in each other's
dreams,
the city a glint in our eyes
like every glistening snowflake
that makes its way
to the sidewalk.

New York City Skyline and Empire State Building - Top of the Rock View
- By Vivienne Gucwa
When the night pulls its cobalt blanket over the city
the lights flicker like stars
in a magnificent universe.
And the world pauses for a minute or two
enthralled in a reciprocal gaze
of epic proportion.
---
The hour right after the sun dips below the horizon is one of the most enchanting hours of the day. It's not quite day and not quite night but it's a blended mixture of the two. There is no better place to witness this transformation in New York City than 70 stories up in the air on the observation deck of Rockefeller Center (known colloquially as Top of the Rock). After feeling the elation that comes with watching the sun set over the city, all of the city's lights come into view twinkling little by little until they all seem to build up to the most intense crescendo of illuminated splendor.
This view is looking south towards lower Manhattan past the Empire State Building. This is the result of a 30 second exposure completed by placing my camera on one of the ledges (while tethered to a very, very still me with gloved hands in pockets barely breathing for fear of moving the camera/camera strap). The Top of the Rock and Empire State Building are rather strict about their no tripod policy. Sometimes you can catch a kind security guard who doesn't mind a gorilla pod but for the most part, you have to get creative if you want to take super long exposures. In this case, since it was so ridiculously cold, there weren't many people on the deck and I staked out my ledge during the pre-sunset time period (the sunset was stunning!) taking photos while waiting for this particular moment. There is a special clarity that comes with this time of year. While this spot is a popular vantage point in the summer, there is also a lot less visibility due to the thick summer haze that hangs over the city in the warmer months. In the dead of winter though, it's crystal clear if you catch a clear day (another rarity!).
Locations of interest in this shot include: The Empire State Building, One World Trade Center (also known as the Freedom Tower or 1 WTC, the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan Bridge, the New York Life building (one of the buildings with a gold top), Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower.

New York City - Night - Nocturne
By Vivienne Gucwa
Over glistening cobblestones
in the haze of summer heat,
the twinkling lights of oncoming cars
cast their glow like fireflies
in a dense urban forest.

the wind plays a nocturne.
