New York City - Night Cityscape - Queensboro Bridge- By Vivienne Gucwa
At night, the city’s lights shine
like stars in a massive urban universe.
And as its supernovas explode
shedding their light
onto the surface of the water,
the night sky looks on in wonder.
This is a view of the Queensboro Bridge (also known as the 59th Street Bridge, Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, and Queens Bridge) and the skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan as seen from Roosevelt Island.

Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge - Two Bridges - New York City- By Vivienne Gucwa The light after a storm in New York City has its own charm. The rivers calm down from their frenzied co-mingling with the rain and the sun comes out to paint the bridges and skylines in light. And if you are there for the exact moment that all of these elements occur, it's nothing short of incredible. --- I like to wait a few months sometimes before I contemplate certain scenes that I have photographed. The distance between the experience and the nostalgia for the initial experience seems to add a certain complexity to the memory. This particular view was captured with the Sony A99 on an absolutely frigid day back in February shortly after a storm passed through. The river was so choppy that waves were literally slapping up against the edge of where I was standing and splashing onto the concrete. I had never seen the light illuminate the Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, and Brooklyn skyline in such a spectacular way before though. I would stand there again a thousand times enduring the river's icy advances just to get a glimpse of this light. ---

Manhattan Bridge - Night - New York City- By Vivienne Gucwa
The world stops spinning on its axis
as the city's lights search through the night
for hearts that flutter to the
syncopation of its pulsating lights.
This was taken on a stormy night in Brooklyn as the waves in the East River pounded the piers and the wind whipped against the faces of the few brave souls who were still standing at the edge of Brooklyn Bridge Park hoping to catch a first glimpse of the city's lights as they flickered into view.

Williamsburg Bridge and New York City Skyline at Sunset- By Vivienne Gucwa Moments are vessels that contain: sparks, magic, effervescent happiness, lingering sadness, red-tinged anger, bittersweet joy all waiting to explode if and when that point in time is visited again. There are moments that exist somewhere between the excited beat of the heart and a welled-up tear in the eye. They are the chills that run up the back of the neck and the small smile that can't be contained when their memory is nudged by a sound, sight, scent, touch. It's the way the light was shining through the bridge as the boat pulled away under a sky blue with hope as the sun set and the lump in the throat subsided momentarily. It's the way the water looked as it rocked the boat gently like a lullaby as it drifted away from the sunlight that poured its light onto the surface of the water. And it's the way everything seemed pointless in comparison to the way the clouds gathered over the city: hopeful tufts of smoke emanating from the sun's extinguishing fire... --- This is a view of the Williamsburg Bridge and the Lower East Side as seen from a boat on the East River during sunset. In the distance sits the skyline of Brooklyn in Dumbo and the Manhattan Bridge. ---

Chinatown- Under the Manhattan Bridge - New York City Street- By Vivienne Gucwa When winter shifts into spring, the light shifts too. Stark, short afternoons that end too abruptly morph vivid, warm afternoons that linger until the sky relents. ---- This was taken on a stark, short afternoon that was only mildly flirting with spring a week or so ago before the city erupted into full-on springtime mode. This is one of my favorite parts of Chinatown under the Manhattan Bridge. ----

Brooklyn Bridge and New York City Skyline - City Lights- By Vivienne Gucwa
It's interesting how photos take on a life of their own with long exposure photography. This was taken on a cold night recently as a storm was rolling in. I waited patiently in between stubborn sustained wind gusts as the water from the East River lapped at the edges of Brooklyn Bridge Park gushing over the sides every so often as if to foreshadow what the clouds were hoping to do to the city.
As storm clouds moved in and the increasingly darkening sky turned various shades of purple and blue shortly after a relatively subdued sunset, there were a few minutes of calm silence. And as the water played nice and the wind decided to run its own marathon elsewhere, 4 seconds were there for the capturing before the skies unleashed their watery exclamations in the form of rain.
This is one of the more popular vantage points for photography of the Brooklyn Bridge. The skyscrapers belong to the Financial District. Prominent structures and buildings include: the Woolworth Building, New York by Gehry (at 8 Spruce Street), One World Trade Center (also known as 1 WTC and/or the Freedom Tower), Pier 17 and the South Street Seaport.

Brooklyn Bridge at Night - New York City- By Vivienne Gucwa If you stop to squint long enough all the dreams whispered on the wind during the day flicker like fire-flies when the evening stretches out across the sky and the rain washes the city's despair away so it can dream itself into another sunrise. ---- This was taken on a gorgeous evening overlooking the New York City skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn. New York City Skyline Sunset and the Brooklyn Bridge on a Summer Evening- By Vivienne Gucwa Summer evenings in New York City weave their own spell when summer night skies slide onto the city through the sticky-sweet haze. The skyscrapers cling to the sunlight wrapped up in the glow and hazy anticipation of just one more kiss of light. --- This was taken at the peak of last summer from a roof top in Brooklyn over looking the skyline of Brooklyn Heights, the Brooklyn Bridge and a very hazy lower Manhattan skyline. I was shooting with a camera I wasn't at all used to shooting with and the temperature was hovering near 80 degrees at night with nearly 100% humidity. The air was thick as molasses and the heat was unrelenting but it was an absolutely gorgeous summer sunset. ----

Williamsburg Bridge Sunset - New York City- By Vivienne Gucwa When the sun sets in the winter, its light pours over the city like the glow from a distant bonfire with scattered light illuminating the grey, steel edges like embers strewn about in the wind. --- The Williamsburg Bridge is a favorite of mine in lower Manhattan. It tends to be overshadowed by the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge when it comes to popularity. This is probably because its pedestrian walkway is completely enclosed by a metal gate and because it isn't in super close proximity to the other two bridges (although one could argue that the pedestrian entrances to all three bridges are in walking distance to each other). However, it definitely lives up to its National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark status. Its architecture is incredible and the views of the New York City skyline and Brooklyn that can be glimpsed from either walkway are stunning. ---

The New York City Skyline and the Chrysler Building- By Vivienne Gucwa
I have always been partial to late summer skyline views here in New York City. The haze that hangs over the horizon like a misty veil seems to lend a special sort of immediacy to the skyscrapers that assert themselves in the foreground.
The Chrysler Building, New York City's art-deco masterpiece of architecture, always looks so regal positioned in front of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge (also known as the 59th Street Bridge). Four smokestacks playfully draw the eye towards the rest of Queens that sprawls out in the distance towards the fading horizon.
It's as if the sky is locked in an embrace with the rest of the city while the skyscrapers that make up the midtown Manhattan skyline are enraptured and wrapped up in their own special moment with the Chrysler Building.

The Brooklyn Bridge and the New York City Skyline- By Vivienne Gucwa
On hazy summer afternoons when dusk pulls its soft purple veil over the city, the skyline softens in the dreamy-eyed gaze of the clouds.
And as light slides from the sky making its way over steel, wood and concrete towards the disintegrating horizon, bridges and skyscrapers melt with the sun into the evening.

The Manhattan Bridge and New York City Skyline- By Vivienne Gucwa "Chapter one. " "He adored New York City. He idolised it all out of proportion. " Uh, no. Make that "He romanticised it all out of proportion. " "To him, no matter what the season was, this was still a town that existed in black and white and pulsated to the great tunes of George Gershwin. " If there is one opening sequence in cinema that perfectly illustrates even a tiny iota of the overwhelming love I have for New York City, it's the opening sequence to Woody Allen's Manhattan which is where the dialogue quoted above originates. I know that people have very definite ideas about Woody Allen but his early body of work still contains some of my favorite interpretations of life in Manhattan and this particular opening still chokes me up absolutely every time I watch it especially the montage from 1:52 on. I actually learned how to play Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue on the piano when I was younger almost entirely because of this opening sequence. I was asked a while ago if I ever get bored or jaded about certain views or landscapes in New York City. I didn't really know how to answer the question without sounding like a blubbering idiot. I know many people seem to get bored of overly-photographed parts of New York City but for me, there is always something new and something special imparted to these landscapes based on each individual artist's perspective. The photo in this post is of a landscape that overwhelms me every time I lay eyes on it. For me, this scene encompasses a feeling that is hard to express entirely in words. It's how the light falls onto the Manhattan Bridge embracing its architecture in a glow while the skyline gracefully pushes through the dreamy haze distilling the essence of New York City down to its purest forms of hope, beauty and possibility. ---
