Chinatown Rooftop Graffiti - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

New York City is an urban layer cake.

This is another one of my favorite views in lower Manhattan. It’s a small segment of an entire universe that exists above millions of New Yorkers.

Layers of colorful graffiti cover the rooftops of these Chinatown apartment buildings as rooftop doors blow open in the wind and colorful clothing sways on clotheslines high above the city below.

Stone Street Historic District - Financial District - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

Something I absolutely love about New York City is that tucked away between the towering monuments of modernity that populate the cityscape are streets that look as if they have been transported from another era and geographic location entirely. These streets are suspended in time like flies in amber.

This area is known as the Stone Street historic district in lower Manhattan. Bound by Stone Street, Pearl Street, and South William Streets and Mill Lane, it is a section that is unlike any of its surrounding blocks. This particular section is bound by South William street and 13-15 South William Street can be seen in this particular view. Around the block from this part of the area are other historic buildings and the Stone Street area ‘proper’.

In 1903, the architect C.P.H. Gilbert designed new street facades on the buildings in this section of South William Street (57 Stone Street on the other side). Gilbert’s neo-Dutch Renaissance architecture features structural details like stepped gables and strapwork and was a nod to the early settlement of Manhattan .

This area which dates back to the 1600s when New York City was first colonized by Dutch settlers was sadly destroyed by the Great Fire of 1835. The surrounding section of Stone Street was rebuilt with granite bases of post-and-lintel construction and upper-additions of brick which were specifically erected for importers and merchants.

New York Winter - Tompkins Square Park - East Village - By Vivienne Gucwa

The clouds squeeze the last bit of light from the sun onto the city below.

It falls over trees and buildings: liquid promise spreading onto a landscape de-saturated by winter's icy breath.

In the wake of winter's gasping utterances, the sun uncovers the world that hides behind boisterous trees in summer.

And a smile spreads across the city's face for a moment: warm and golden hope spreading itself over the remains of the day.

Flatiron Building Sunset - Autumn - New York City- By Vivienne Gucwa

Late autumn in New York City has its own brisk beauty. Cold air sharply punctuates the end of every wind gust and the sun retreats earlier and earlier every day. Autumn clings to December in the brief moments before the trees drop their leaves to the ground for good and every afternoon sunset reaches through the sharp cold with its lighted fingers in one last dramatic attempt to bring warmth to the city.

This particular view is of the Flatiron Building, one of New York City's unique and classic skyscrapers, as seen from inside Madison Square Park during autumn.
