My version was formed early on, a result of falling in love with a combination of streetscapes in classic cinema, futuristic sci-fi city environments in literature and film, and years of traversing New York City on foot. These streets tug at memories I haven’t made yet while yanking memories I treasure from the deep recesses of my mind. This is one of those streets. It’s Staple Street in Tribeca. A tiny alley-like street, it contains one of the most fascinating pedestrian bridges (also known as a skyway, traverse, skywalk and a host of other terms) I have ever seen in New York City. --- - New York Through The Lens

New York City Skyline - Skyscrapers of the Financial District as seen from Midtown - By Vivienne Gucwa

I love the variety of skyscrapers that make up the New York City skyline in lower Manhattan. They jut up like stalagmites from the city floor. This skyline view is usually photographed from the other side usually across the East River but this is a view of the skyline as seen from midtown Manhattan. Prominent works of architecture include New York by Gehry and the Municipal Building.

The New York City Skyline at Sunset - By Vivienne Gucwa

Late summer sunsets over New York City are the most intoxicating.

The bubbles from the wake of boats in the river go right to the head.

And the sun's trail of gold kisses on the water

lead straight to the heart of the city.

It's this time of year when I start to miss late summer sunsets like this in New York City. When I need to clear my mind, I head to the water. Sometimes I go to the beach to listen to the waves and sometimes I go to the river to gain perspective on everything going on in my life. I don't know what I would do if I lived in a land-locked area.

On the day that I took this photo, I rode the East River Ferry for 4 hours straight (the day-pass is incredible) watching the light stretch across the sky and cityscape changing subtly every hour until the sun burst over the city like a supernova. The waves were perfect that day. The East River Ferry stops in both Manhattan and Brooklyn going from 34th Street in midtown, down to Wall Street's Pier 11, passing under each of lower Manhattan's bridges and then across to stops in Brooklyn and Queens connecting at piers in DUMBO, Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Long Island City.

Williamsburg Bridge Sunset - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

When the sun sets in the winter, its light pours over the city like the glow from a distant bonfire with scattered light illuminating the grey, steel edges like embers strewn about in the wind.

The Williamsburg Bridge is a favorite of mine in lower Manhattan. It tends to be overshadowed by the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge when it comes to popularity. This is probably because its pedestrian walkway is completely enclosed by a metal gate and because it isn't in super close proximity to the other two bridges (although one could argue that the pedestrian entrances to all three bridges are in walking distance to each other). However, it definitely lives up to its National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark status. Its architecture is incredible and the views of the New York City skyline and Brooklyn that can be glimpsed from either walkway are stunning.

The Manhattan Bridge and the New York City Skyline at Sunset - By Vivienne Gucwa

This image inhabits a very special place in my heart.

It was taken near the tail-end of a storm back. It had rained only an hour before I made my way across the Brooklyn Bridge and as the sun started to set over New York City, the storm clouds parted just enough to allow the most magnificent amount of sunlight wash over the Manhattan Bridge.

As the rest of the New York City skyline faded into the languid haze in behind the gorgeously lit bridge, I knew right then and there that photography was something that made me feel more alive and at one with myself than anything else in the world.

New York Winter - Snow in Soho - By Vivienne Gucwa

This part of Soho is part of the Soho Cast Iron District which consists of 500 buildings that feature distinct cast-iron architecture spanning over a 26 block radius. Many of the buildings date back to the 1870s when the area was primarily residential. However, most of the residences during the later part of the 20th century were converted for commercial use which allowed Soho to play an integral role in the commercial development of New York City.

This is a view looking north up Mercer Street in Soho towards midtown. The Chrysler Building can be seen in the distance. The snow-covered sign on the left belongs to Fanelli's Cafe which has stood in this spot since the 1850s. Fanelli’s Cafe has the distinction of being the second oldest food and drink establishment that is located on its same site (the oldest food and drink establishment in New York City is Bridge Cafe which dates back to 1794). In the 1920s, Fanelli's Cafe operated as a speakeasy during prohibition.

Autumn Leaves - Central Park - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

Autumn is the start of something new. It’s the promise of briskness followed by warmth. It's an inviting whisper that lingers in the air and brushes past the skin with its transient presence.

We inhale the earth’s transition deeply into our lungs and exhale hopeful utterances on the condensation of our warm exhaled breaths.

I love Central Park on overcast autumn days. When the elm trees are at their peak and have shed their leaves creating beautiful trails of foliage and the air is crisp, there is nothing better.

Storm Clouds - Chinatown - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

As storm clouds approach, the sun washes over the city showering its splendor onto the urban landscape like a brilliant star projecting its last bits of light into the vast universe.

I love the light on the buildings in this section of Chinatown before a storm. This particular view overlooks the tenements that face the Forsyth Market under the Manhattan Bridge where produce and other food is sold daily in a sprawling open air market.

Afternoon Sunlight on a Greenwich Village Street - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

The afternoon yawns with its mouth full of sunlight before it slips into the shadows of evening.

Fire escapes catch the sun's gleam: staircases for dreamers propelling dreams skyward.

And the trees bow graciously in the lingering glow of sweet sunlight: courteous hosts beckoning wanderers to bask in the shared glow and warmth of the city.
