Fragments - Overlooking Two Bridges - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

There are areas in lower Manhattan where fragments of the city's history have settled like fine dust, fragile and prone to the whims of time.

Around these hallowed enclaves, newer history reaches higher towards the sky and rises from the ground borne from the dust of the city's past.

This particular spot is known as Two Bridges and sits along the East River. It borders Chinatown and the Lower East Side and has long been a dwelling spot for many different immigrant communities over the years. It sits alongside the infamous and historic Five Points area where Irish, Jewish and Italian gangs battled to the death in the mid-19th century. It is currently home to a large community of Chinese immigrants and many of the buildings are tenements dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Where does the city’s memory imprint itself?

Is it imprinted on the concrete of sidewalks weathered by world-weary feet? Is it imprinted in the foundations of the skyscrapers that scratch the surface of the sky connecting the sidewalks below to loftier aspirations? Is it imprinted in the people whose lives unfold frenetically over the vast urban landscapes that stretch across the city like veins and arteries? Is it imprinted in the transportation systems that contract and expand like ligaments and tendons, flexing their way through the corporeal terrain?

Or is the city’s memory imprinted on elements that only peripherally stake their claim on such a grandiose landscape?

In the petals of flowers, freshly opened and unfettered by permanence, the city effortlessly makes an impression like pressing a hand into soft flesh or falling slowly into a cloud.

Catching the Light - Cherry Blossoms - Brooklyn Botanic Garden - By Vivienne Gucwa

Staring into the light of the bright spring sun surrounded by flowering trees, petals swirled in the wind catching the light like glowing embers eventually scattering to the algae-colored pond below where they shimmered on the surface like tiny lanterns.

I was reminded of a comment that someone made about several of my recent spring photos where they were surprised to see nature represented in such a way in New York City because for them, New York City seemed to be nothing more than "a wilderness of rocks". The truth is that there are so many places to find serenity and nature in New York City. There are over 1700 parks that span all five boroughs of New York City, many of which boast beautiful landscapes.

This particular image was taken yesterday at Brooklyn Botanic Garden in the Japanese Hill and Pond Garden, one of my favorite spots to enjoy the many colors and sights of spring. The Brooklyn Botanic garden has more than 200 cherry trees of forty-two Asian species, making it one of the foremost cherry-viewing sites outside of Japan. The first cherries were planted at the garden after World War I, a gift from the Japanese government.

The Japanese Hill and Pond Garden located in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden was the first Japanese garden to be created in an American public garden. It was constructed in 1914 and first opened to the public in June 1915. It is widely considered by numerous landscape architects, to be the masterpiece of its creator, Japanese landscape designer Takeo Shiota.

Under cover of darkness, the city lights flicker: stars and skyscraper constellations in a vast urban universe.

And when the night squints, small evocations come into focus: plaintive pleas and heart fluttering statements released into the city's collective mind.

Deluge of Light - The Chelsea Skyline as seen from the High Line - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

The summer sun washes over the city one last time as storm clouds gather overhead in congress with themselves over when they should rain their praise down from the sky.

Wild flowers swayed by the whispers of the wind take one last look at the urban landscape as it glows in the sun's deluge of light waiting for the sky to quench their thirst.

I love the drama that plays out in the sky before a storm especially when viewed alongside the buildings that make up the Chelsea skyline as viewed from the High Line. Tiny tenements stand in the shadow of towering older buildings with ornate architecture which are framed by the more modern architecture and the water towers stand proudly against the sky like beacons.

Weeping Cherry Blossoms in the Sun - Brooklyn - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

There are days when blossoms catch glints of sunlight on their petals that sway slowly in warm breezes.

On these days, it is as if the sun has exploded in the sky raining its light down to the earth below.

And the trees hold their branches out like eager tongues waiting to catch the first snowflakes of winter.

At night after the multitudes have retreated to their homes away from the buildings and streets that hold them close during the day the city relaxes shaking the dust of the long day from its concrete limbs.

The street lights flicker like dream-heavy blinks of an eye while smokestacks exhale world-weary breaths of smoke into the yawning night air.

Where I End And You Begin - Skyscraper - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

When the wind is still, the sky seduces the city with a reverie of itself poured onto the glass of skyscrapers like a liquid dream emulsion.

The fine feathered touch of the clouds brush lightly against the the cool skin of structures reaching towards the distant comfort of loftier aspirations and shadows cast on the world below muffle the quickened heartbeats and soft sighs of this not-so-clandestine meeting.

Despite all my protestations about glass buildings rising in the place of other more ornate and classic works of architecture, I will say that if you find yourself looking up at the newer glass buildings on a beautiful day, the views are beautiful.
