Stars in an Earthly Sky - Cherry Blossoms in the Sun - By Vivienne Gucwa

The sun burned bright like a fiery orb as the churning storm clouds in the sky sought to extinguish it: their tufts of purple and grey gathering round in consensus before a final engulfing embrace.

As the sky determined its own fate, the sun's fire burned a fiery trail through spring blossoms and leaves.

And in the sun's wake, each blossom twinkled: luminescent stars in an earthly sky.

Flowers and the City - High Line - Chelsea - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

There is a beautiful tension in the juxtaposition between the flowers that grow along the High Line and the distinctly urban views that exist beyond the High Line. The High Line is an elevated park that runs along 10th Avenue all the way from midtown down to the heart of the meatpacking district. In the 1930s, freight trains ran along these re-purposed tracks delivering supplies and service to the buildings lining the High Line. In some of the newer sections of the High Line, the closeness to the buildings that line the tracks is made all the more extreme by the wildflowers that have sprouted up along what remains of the train tracks. Flowers and plant life now breathe life into this space that was once dominated by industry.

Perhaps that is why it sometimes has a vaguely post-apocalyptic feel. The scenery calls to mind I am Legend's fictional world where urban settings which were once thriving hubs of industry are now dominated by the plant life that had been suppressed for years under the weight of urban life.

Times Tells Its Own Tale - 480 Van Brunt Street - Red Hook Stores - Fairway Market - Brooklyn - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

480 Brunt Street is also known as the Red Hook Stores. It is a Civil War-era storehouse located in the Red Hook Waterfront Historic District in Brooklyn, New York City.

Red Hook, located in Northwestern Brooklyn was settled in 1636 by Dutch Colonists who named the area Roode Hoek (red point) after the red hue of the soil and because the area jutted out into the water. Due to its waterfront location, ships from all over the world would dock at Red Hook to exchange cargo and make repairs for well over a century. When many of the shipyards were relocated in the 20th century, the area fell was marked by significant urban decay.

The building in this photo, known as the Red Hook Stores, was built in 1869 by the builder William Beard. Beard, who was an Irish immigrant made millions via his building and railroad empire. At the end of the Civil War, New York City was receiving such a large amount of goods that Manhattan could not handle all of the cargo. Brooklyn's waterfront became the alternative and warehouses like this one played a crucial role in offloading cargo like grain, cotton, hemp, jute, indigo, leather, fruits, tobacco, vegetables, cocoa beans and coffee. This building now houses a Fairway Market and apartment residences. The beautiful iron shutters that give this warehouse building so much charm were initially built to protect the precious cargo stored in the warehouse from the elements.

The decayed trolley cars which sit in the foreground also have an interesting link to the past. In the 20th century, there were many trolley lines that criss-crossed the Brooklyn landscape and served as transportation for residents. The trolleys were in use until the 1950s. To celebrate the trolleys that would have been seen here for many years, these trolleys were acquired and put in front of the Red Hook Stores permanently. They aren't from New York City originally though. The trolley cars were acquired from Boston and Oslo and were repainted to match the original color scheme of the trolleys that would have been found in Brooklyn in the beginning of the 20th century. Worn by time and natural elements, they are beautiful examples of urban decay.

The Empire State Building and New York City Rooftops - By Vivienne Gucwa

The Empire State Building always seems to stand out when viewing certain cross-sections of the New York City skyline. I have always imagined it to be an urban lighthouse helping all urban wanderers navigate through the dense sea of buildings that surround its distinctive shape.

This vantage point is from a rooftop located as far west as you can possibly go in Chelsea before landing in the Hudson River.

Spring writes its love poem to the earth with the branches of trees.

Blossoms blush pink, their heated and flushed faces turn towards the sun which has freshly awakened after winter’s long slumber as the wind carries their words on its wings.

Brooklyn Bridge - Under Future Skies - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

Old metropolises stood partially intact - lit with a colorful glow that emanated from crowded skies: remains from a future that soared past the earth.

The skies were dark with the exhaust of sky-borne vehicles and burned out stars: remains from a present littered behind the future.

And under the left-over sky-rubble, old architecture rose from the ground stubbornly: remains from a past left behind long ago.

Stairways to the Sky - Broadway Buildings - Soho - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

When I was younger, I thought that the fire escapes on this part of Broadway were staircases that led right up to the sky: modern-day beanstalks for all urban Jacks (of Jack and the Beanstalk). It was as if there was a whole other city up there in the blinding sunlight only accessible to those clever enough to climb up the stairs.

I still like to imagine that this is the case.
