New York City Skyscrapers - By Vivienne Gucwa

They rise: stalagmites borne from an earth bursting at the seams with lofty aspirations.

And the city's streets weave their way through them: well-worn crevices on the surface of dreams.

This is one of my favorite views of the skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan. It's a view from the top of the Empire State Building. I have always loved the variety of architecture and intensely dense feel of this patch of the New York City skyline.

Perhaps that is why I am so drawn to the ones that do exist.

Spring Blossoms Overlooking the Central Park Reservoir - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

On Spring mornings, the world hangs in sleepy stasis.

Trees, adorned with blossoms as soft as winter's first snow, use their branches to gracefully conduct the world's awakening in a daily symphony at dawn.

I am admittedly a night person. I have tried for years to trick my stubborn body into accepting a different biological time-clock to no avail.

However, on days when I am carefully trying to get myself to accept the mornings as a friend and not a foe, I am always amazed at how differently the world appears especially during certain times of the year like springtime. On a perfectly cloudy Spring day in Central Park, it's as if the world is opens up its dewy eyes one by one as the city stretches out languidly for a few hours.

Wildflowers Along the High Line - New York City - By Vivienne Gucwa

The wildflowers that grow along the High Line Park are some of my favorite flowers in New York City. Greenery has a way of thriving in this elevated park due to the nature of the buildings that line the old railroad tracks which cast shade on certain sections while other sections bask in direct sunlight daily.

In the 1930s, freight trains ran along these re-purposed tracks delivering supplies and service to the buildings lining the High Line. In some of the newer sections of the High Line, the closeness to the buildings that line the tracks is made all the more extreme by the wildflowers that have sprouted up along what remains of the train tracks. The shaded areas are brimming with colorful flowers and plant life that has claimed its home here breathing life into this space that was once dominated by industry.

Spring blushes bright pink against the pale white petals of trees that reach up towards the sky.

And the sun showers each upturned petal with warm kisses.

Flight - The New York City Skyline From Above - By Vivienne Gucwa

Driven by an imagination stirred by visions Batman flying through Gotham, I used to have vivid dreams when I was younger of flying through the skyscrapers that are part of the midtown Manhattan skyline.

This cluster of skyscrapers is one of my favorites. These buildings seem to huddle together in a solemn solidarity: titans comprised of multitudes of urban aspirations.

In the bright afternoon light of the sun, the city squints its eyes momentarily.

Buildings emerge from their slumbering shadows and streets glisten.

It's during this momentary squint that every sun gleam and distant figure on each sun-kissed street flicker in and out of view: urban mirages filtered through the eyes of the city.

The Manhattan Bridge and New York City Skyline - By Vivienne Gucwa

"Chapter one. "

"He adored New York City.
He idolised it all out of proportion. "

Uh, no. Make that "He romanticised it
all out of proportion. "

"To him,
no matter what the season was,

this was still a town
that existed in black and white

and pulsated to the great tunes
of George Gershwin. "

If there is one opening sequence in cinema that perfectly illustrates even a tiny iota of the overwhelming love I have for New York City, it's the opening sequence to Woody Allen's Manhattan which is where the dialogue quoted above originates. I know that people have very definite ideas about Woody Allen but his early body of work still contains some of my favorite interpretations of life in Manhattan and this particular opening still chokes me up absolutely every time I watch it especially the montage from 1:52 on. I actually learned how to play Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue on the piano when I was younger almost entirely because of this opening sequence.

I was asked a while ago if I ever get bored or jaded about certain views or landscapes in New York City. I didn't really know how to answer the question without sounding like a blubbering idiot. I know many people seem to get bored of overly-photographed parts of New York City but for me, there is always something new and something special imparted to these landscapes based on each individual artist's perspective.

The photo in this post is of a landscape that overwhelms me every time I lay eyes on it. For me, this scene encompasses a feeling that is hard to express entirely in words. It's how the light falls onto the Manhattan Bridge embracing its architecture in a glow while the skyline gracefully pushes through the dreamy haze distilling the essence of New York City down to its purest forms of hope, beauty and possibility.

Sun Fire - The New York City Sunline in Silhouette at Sunset - By Vivienne Gucwa

I used to refer to sunsets as sunfire.

Those first sunsets burned through my retinas into the innermost recesses of my mind.

Clouds poured over the smoldering sparks of orange like thick plumes of smoke and before the sun extinguished itself, it burned the brightest of any flame in existence.

When the sun sets over New York City, it’s as if a thousand flames dance across the sky, leaving embers scattered across the skyline in the wake of it’s burning: like a fevered dream scattering its remnants across the mind before the deepest of slumbers.

I used to refer to sunsets as sunfire.

I still do.
